Donald Plott
In 1983, two Davidson alumni, Joseph Robinson '62, principal oboist of the New York Philharmonic, and William Workman '62, leading baritone of the Frankfurt Opera Company, joined with Zubin Mehta, music director of the New York Philharmonic, to perform a benefit concert at Davidson College to create an endowment to honor the memory of Donald Plott, a member of the Davidson music faculty for 30 years. Each year, the Davidson College Music Department awards two $8,000 Plott Awards to incoming students.
J. Estes Millner
The late J. Estes Millner, a native of Reidsville, NC, and a Davidson alumnus, directed that the entirety of his estate go to the Davidson College Music Department. His generous endowment has created the Millner Scholarship. Each year, two $8,000 Millner Awards are given to incoming students.
James C. Harper
In 1979, the late James C. Harper of Lenoir, North Carolina, a 1915 Davidson alumnus and nationally known band director, established an endowment to benefit instrumental music activities and establish the Harper Scholarship Fund at Davidson. The Harper Scholarship subsidizes private music lessons.
Zachary F. Long
In 1990, the late Zachary F. Long, a 1965 Davidson alumnus, established an award honoring Davidson students who showed excellence in music performance. The award became an endowed scholarship fund in 1992. The Long Scholarship is awarded to current students, regardless of major.
Jim & Peggy Vail
Jim and Peggy Vail have supported music at Davidson with the gift of a Bosendorfer piano, the funding of the Vail music residency in the spring of 1997, and most recently by establishing an endowed scholarship fund. The Vail Scholarship is awarded to current students, regardless of major.
