Tara Villa Chamra is Assistant Professor of music and Director of the Davidson College Symphony Orchestra. Chamra has served as the assistant conductor for the Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra, the Penn State Chamber Orchestra, and the Franklin & Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra. Her credits in opera and musical theatre include L’Italiana in Algeri, Carmen, Into the Woods, and The Elixir of Love.
In July 2007, Chamra won the first Varna International Orchestral Conducting Competition held in Vidin, Bulgaria. She has been invited back to conduct the Vidin State Philharmonic in their 2007-08 season. Two years prior, Chamra received a grant through the Global Partners Project and Associated Colleges of the South to conduct in a performance with the New Symphony Orchestra of Sofia, Bulgaria.
Chamra’s previous mentors include Donald Portnoy, Gerardo Edelstein, and Brian Norcross. Conductors with whom Chamra has studied in workshop settings throughout the United States, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic include Marin Alsop, Leslie Dunner, JoAnn Falletta, Samuel Jones, Gustav Meier, Jorge Mester, Larry Rachleff, Carl St. Clair, and Dian Tchobanov, among others.
Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Chamra studied percussion and piano at the Preparatory of the Peabody Conservatory. She holds degrees from Franklin & Marshall College (B.A. cum laude theatre and music, with honors in music), the Pennsylvania State University (M.M. orchestral conducting, Pi Kappa Lambda), and the University of South Carolina (D.M.A. orchestral conducting) where she was awarded the 2006 LeDare Robinson Graduate Award for Academic Excellence in Music.
