Mauro Botelho began his musical studies at age 5. He lived in his parents' native Brazil during his middle- and high-school years, where he continued his musical activities as the principal bassoonist of the São Paulo Municipal Youth Orchestra and the São Paulo State Youth Orchestra. He holds bachelor's (Summa cum laude) and master's degrees in music theory from the Universty of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, and a Ph.D. from The University of Michigan.
Prof. Botelho came to Davidson College in 1990. He teaches Fundamentals of Music (MUS 101), the music theory sequence (MUS 201 and 202), and Form and Analysis (MUS 302). He also teaches courses in music of Latin-America and Brazil.
Prof. Botelho's scholarly interests center on the music of the late baroque and classical periods, especially in the aspect of rhythm. He has presented in the United States, Brazil, and Europe.
