Andrew Oster is a Ph.D. candidate in musicology at Princeton University, where he earned his M.A. in 2004. He graduated cum laude with degrees in history and music from Davidson College in 2001. Oster also studied musicology at the Institut für Musikwissenschaft of the Bayerische Julius-Maximilians-Universität in Würzburg, Germany. His Ph.D. dissertation explores the history of German radiophonic music, with particular focus on the genre of radio opera in 1950s West Germany. Further research interests include 20th-century German music and politics, opera, the history of sound recording, Russian and Soviet music, Haydn and Classical-era sacred music. He has presented papers on the music of Hans Werner Henze, Loyset Compère, Franz Joseph Haydn, and Francesco Cavalli. Oster is contributing a chapter in the forthcoming book "Sounding Off: Theorizing Disability and Music" (Routledge). In addition to his scholarly pursuits, Oster enjoys record collecting and has played trombone and sackbut in various ensembles over the years.
