The newly renovated Sloan Music Center

Facilities

On August 5, 2002, we moved into the new Sloan Music Center. Formerly known as the Grey College Library and then the Grey College Union, the building has undergone a major transformation and will now be home for the Department of Music.

The lower level of the Center is home to our piano, voice and high string Artist Associates, and includes teaching spaces for our other string, wind, and brass teachers.  In addition to the instructional spaces, the lower level also houses a state of the art electronic music studio, a recording studio, and our keyboard laboratory. A student lounge with vending areas, lounge chairs, and study tables sits in the center of the lower level.  Finally, there are seven spacious practice rooms, fully soundproofed and equipped with pianos and stands, as well as a multi-functional classroom/small ensemble rehearsal space.

On the main level are the Music Department’s Office, faculty offices, and two classrooms.  One wing of this level is devoted to the Music Library. Not only is this library home to our collections of music scores, reference books, videos, DVDs and CDs, but it also contains four listening stations, four computer-based multi-media stations with DVD capabilities, and a small group listening/viewing room.  One final exciting feature is the availability of laptop computers that can be checked out by students for use within the library.  Soon you will be able to click here to access the music library’s homepage.

On the upper level, the Tyler-Tallman Recital Hall with a seating capacity of 200 provides an intimate performance space for student recitals, lectures, and master classes. Available on stage for qualified students’ use are two concert grand pianos: a New York Steinway “D,” and a recently purchased Hamburg Steinway “D.” A spacious instrumental hall and a large choral room equipped with another Steinway “D” offer students the best in ensemble rehearsal spaces.

Other facilities on campus that serve as venues for the Music Department’s concerts are the Duke Family Performance Hall in the College Union, the Carnegie Guest house and the sanctuary of Davidson College Presbyterian Church.  The new Duke facility is a state of the art facility with a drop-in acoustical shell and a recently purchased Steinway D Concert Grand Piano. Here the College’s ensembles present concerts like the recent choir and orchestra performance of Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem. In addition, it also serves as the forum for our Concert Series of visiting artists.  The living room of the Carnegie Guest House with its Bösendorfer Imperial Grand Piano is an intimate setting where students sometimes offer solo recitals.  Finally, the sanctuary of Davidson College Presbyterian Church, with its resonant acoustics, is the site of many of the choral concerts and our annual Christmas Vespers Service.

We at Davidson College are excited about our facilities and invite you to come visit us, or better yet, come to one of our concerts.
