Prof. Bill Lawing rehearses the Davidson College Jazz Ensemble
in Tyler-Tallman Hall

The Jazz Ensemble and Other Wind Activities

The Davidson College Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned “big band” of approximately eighteen musicians. The group rehearses and performs throughout the year, with several events highlighting the schedule. The spring concert, a performance is in the Duke Family Performance Hall, features a major guest artist. The fall includes a show at Family Weekend, and the week prior to the beginning of the spring semester is the annual tour shared with the Symphony Orchestra. This year’s tour will take us to Chicago, with several performances along the way. Along with these performances, the Jazz Ensemble commonly performs at many events throughout the region, including the extremely popular Concerts on the Green in Davidson.

Other Wind Activities

As part of the Symphony Orchestra concerts, pieces for small and large wind ensemble are included. Other opportunities will include the Brass Ensemble, which gives entirely separate performances, highlighted by the annual BrassFest. In addition to these, chamber ensembles are organized, especially brass and woodwind quintets, and chamber concerts are routinely scheduled. Also, students have large numbers of solo performance opportunities in recitals, held throughout the year.
