Concerto Competition
As part of its February 28, 2008 concert, the Davidson College Symphony Orchestra will feature up to three soloists, selected through a competition that will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2007.
Auditions should consist of one movement of a concerto or a similar piece (such as a concert aria for singers) not to exceed fourteen minutes in duration. Students must audition on the same composition that they would perform in February if selected. It is strongly encouraged that students memorize the piece for the competition – the judges may look more favorably on those who have their piece memorized.
Dr. Chamra will determine whether the piece is within the abilities of the DCSO. Applicants are urged to communicate their chosen piece as early as possible so that she will have the opportunity to respond in a timely manner.
All students are eligible to compete, with a few exceptions. If you have won the competition in previous years as an individual soloist, you may not compete again as an individual soloist, but you may compete as a part of a duet or trio. If you have won the competition in the past as a part of a duet or trio, you may compete again either with a different duet or trio or as an individual soloist. However, if you have already won the competition twice, no matter whether as a soloist or part of a group, you are no longer eligible.
Michael Rowland will provide the accompaniment on the day of the competition. You must submit, with your application, the original score of the accompaniment for your piece, unless you have already given the score to Mr. Rowland. The winners will be determined by a panel of judges who are not affiliated with the Davidson College Music Department. While the deadline is 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 5th, applicants are encouraged to submit their applications to Professor Chamra as soon as possible. Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.
