The Puuc Region is actually composed
of three physiographic zones: the
Sierrita de Ticul, the escarpment front-
ing the northern plains, 2) the Valle de
Santa Elena, a broad expanse with deep
soils and little topographic variation,
and 3) the Bolonchen Hills, a region of
kegelkarst hills.
Kiuic is located in this last region.
Among the important ecological consid-
erations are a lack of accessible natural
water sources, which required that com-
munities construct artificial water stor-
age facilities, and strong differences in
relief, which meant that cultivable soils
are generally confined to valley floors,
and are hence limited in extent. Despite
these constraints, the agricultural poten-
tial of soils are generally quite high, due
to abundant rainfall.
